THE MAYBE SHOWS...

So another week of TV is coming to a close and I am still finding it hard to get into a few of the newer shows. As much as I'm wanting to stick with them, I am slowly losing interest. However there are a few shows I'm loving.

For starters I have to mention The Ringer. It seriously is a bad soap opera made for late night TV. The storyline gets more complex and more ridiculous each week, yet somehow I can't stop watching. It's like a car accident that you can't look away from, yet you know it's bad from you. I go away from each episode feeling worse about myself for wasting another hour of my life on it. As much as I love Sarah Michelle Gellar, I might have to be breaking up with her on this one.

Another show I'm about to give up on is Charlie's Angels. Seriously it boring and uneventful. On top of that, it doesn't even come close to comparing to the original. Although on a positive side, it does fit the poster completely. Simple, white and unoriginal yet lacking nostalgia.

After this weeks episode of Playboy Club, I'm still on the fence. I neither have positive thoughts for it or negative at the moment. I'm not excited about it, but I'm also not wanting to run the other way. It is starting to develop a plot a little more, so we will see if my thoughts change by next week.

Now for the shows I'm loving. As an earlier post mentioned, I absolutely LOVE Hart of Dixie. I think it is absolutely fabulous and will only get better. Another show I'm completely addicted to is Revenge. It is everything the title leads it to be. It's catty and drama filled and beyond juicy. I can not get enough of it!!! I'm also seriously intrigued with The Secret Circle. It is the perfect companion to Vampire Diaries and I believe that Kevin Williamson can do no wrong. I'm and not completely hooked on the show yet, however I do not foresee any reason that it will not become a favorite for me.

This week Pan Am and Terra Nova premiered. Both of these shows equally surprised me. I was really on the fence with both of these shows on whether I would enjoy them. They are completely different shows, yet they both offered something I could enjoy. Pan Am had the right mixture of drama and adventure and should be interesting to see where it goes. So far I really like the show, but it will be interesting to see where it goes. Terra Nova however I am absolutely in love with. After the end of Lost I felt that there would never be a show with the same mystery surrounding it, but Terra Nova defiantly fits that category. I view it as a mixture of Lost and Firefly and I can not wait to continue on with the journey.

Till next week...
Michelle

Pretty Little Liars Book 1 Discussion

Jennie:

1. Alison doesn't seem like a good friend. It seems like she is trying to make her friends uncomfortable with just how much she knows about them. I think the intro chapter is very interesting (in the TV show it seems like this is covered in multiple flashbacks) because it really shows what the girls were like when they had Ali as this frenemy character. The way she is characterized I don't think Ali could ever be a good friend.

2. I think the author is trying to set up that being dishonest isn't a black and white issue in these books, there are grey areas, all the girls will have moments of dishonesty. Is this a good thing? I don't know. But I think it serves its purpose and I don't think that the girls are necessarily bad girls.

3. I think the meanest message is the one sent to Hanna. The way I saw it, the other three girls got messages that were more like "I see you, I know what you're doing" whereas Hanna's message is much more pointed and talks about her past and makes a personal attack. It's downright mean.

4. They each seem to think they have a deep connection with her (funny how none of them seem friends with one another outside of their friendship with Ali) but I almost think Emily had the deepest connection since there was a little bit more than their friendship... I don't really know though.

5. I would like to think Wren is a different story. It seems like she actually likes him and as more than just a fancy doctor to bring home to her parents. They talk about books and they talk about sports and she defends him. That's more than just creating jealousy.

6. They definitely don't seem like best friends, they seem like acquaintences. They aren't undermining one another, though, so I wouldn't call them frenemies. I definitely wouldn't say they can rely on one another. This is a friendship that is held at arms length.

7. I don't think Maya is either good or bad. She's helping break Emily out of her shell. She's more good than bad in my opinion.

8. Nobody really knows Aria, she's trying very hard to be someone different. Ezra may just be a fling, I don't really know. I think a major part of the attraction is that he didn't know her before.

9. This was ridiculous! Her parents should have never been allowed to have another child. It's so obvious that they support Melissa and that Spencer is the odd child out, but seriously? I was absolutely shocked by her treatment.

10. Ali must have had her own secrets, but I don't know that any of the liars knew any of them. This is a really interesting character trait for Ali, she has to know everything about anyone but doesn't want anyone knowing anything about her. It makes you really wonder what she's hiding. I'm thinking that we will have to hear more about some of Ali's secrets in later books. I'm looking forward to finding out what skeletons are in her closet (and I'm sure the liars are too).

11. It wouldn't surprise me if there was a third party involved that Ali told everyone's secrets to. It seems very in line with her character to tell other people's secrets. She seems to feel the need to control the flow of information and it wouldn't surprise me if she already had it controlled. Bad friend if this is the case!

12. I don't like Ali. I don't think she was a good friend to the girls. She was too controlling. I rarely like the queen bee character and Ali is the quintessential queen bee.

13. I think Spencer is my favorite, but I really find that I respond to all of the girls in different ways. I like that Spencer is willing to stick up for people the way she sticks up for Wren with her family, and even how she didn't always go along with Ali. It's interesting that she's the only one who ever seemed to stand up to Ali.

14. Based on personality traits I would have to say that I'm probably most like Emily (aside from the whole Maya thing, come on...). I'm a goody two shoes to the max. I'm always terrified that if I do something wrong that not only will EVERYONE find out about it, but that they will all be extra disappointed in me. Emily is that exact way.

15. This was a bit of a problem for me, but I guess it's pretty practical for other people's high school experience. Do I think the book is appropriate for younger teens? no.

16. I'm enjoying the book because it's giving more detail about the girls. It's almost like a prequel or a pilot episode to the tv series. I'm looking forward to seeing how subsequent books shake up in terms of the show. This book almost seemed like the first episode. I'm ready for the girls to actually spend time together instead of everything being separate. I like them as friends in the TV show, they aren't friends yet in the book and that just isn't as fun... hopefully next book!

Michelle:

1. Alison was never a good friend to any of the girls. I view her as each girl’s internal demon. She knows exactly how to push their buttons and uses it every chance she gets. She does this because she may seem confident and an open book to each girl, however she actually has many secrets that none of them will ever know. Each girl knows a secret of their own, but they are too scared to reveal that secret to the rest of the girls. Alison is insecure and uses the other girls’ insecurities to protect herself. The other girls on the other hand have always felt like the outcasts and feel that Alison brought them together when really Alison is the outcast and they bring themselves together.

2. I think it is a mixture of their personality traits as well as being understandable. They are so use to “hiding” things from the Jenna incident to all the other things Alison made them do, that it’s natural for them to lie and hide things. Each girl demonstrates this in their own way dependent on their personality. For instance Emily is just looking for her place in the world and hiding from who she really is, so therefore she hides from Maya. Aria has always felt out of place and older than her peers, so when she finally meets someone she relates to, she lies. Hanna was always the fat unpopular one, so she now does everything she can to be perfect and fit in, even if that means stealing. Spencer has never felt like she was good second best to her sister, so she does whatever she can to compare to Melissa and ultimately is be better than her.

3. I think the meanest message from “A” is the one sent to Emily. Emily is confused with her sexuality and who she is, so for “A” to rub that in her face, that is beyond cruel. While each girl’s message held it’s own level of cruelty, no one else’s message directly related to the girl.

4. I think each girl was closer with Ali than with one another because Ali was the key to their friendship. After she disappeared, the girls stopped being friends. They suddenly did not have anything else in common with each other. The girl’s wanted desperately to be accepted by Ali and would do anything Ali wanted them to do. None of the girl’s felt this need with each other, nor did they have their own adventures and secrets. The only secrets within the group involved Ali and usually one other girl.

5.I think Spencer goes after Wren because she wants to prove once and for all she is better then Melissa. She has been fighting for that chance her entire life and she is finally starting to shine. While some of her reasoning comes from her jealousy of Melissa, I think she also goes after Wren because she can. Spencer is finally starting to see that she does not have to live in Melissa’s shadow, and that Melissa can’t control her.

6. I defiantly think Mona and Hanna are frenimies. For example when they are sitting at the country club talking about Hanna being arrested, Mona is quick to point out that Hanna’s face is spotty. A true friend would never call out their friend like that. They are both judgmental of each other and I believe they would turn on each other at any moment. However I think Mona is much more of a friend to Hanna than Hanna is to Mona. Mona was the outcast in the beginning and Hanna would openly make fun of her with Ali. Mona always wanted to be her friend, while Hanna only wanted to be her friend when they both went on a total makeover journey.

7. I think Maya is a great influence for Emily. Emily is trying to find herself whether that is being interested in girls, or wanting to continue swimming. Maya is open to Emily being whoever she wants to be and is bringing Emily out of her comfort zone. Without Maya, I don’t believe Emily would ever have had the courage to stand up to her mom or be who she wants to be.

8. I’m not sure Ezra really is special to Aria or if it’s only because he doesn’t know her background. I believe they have a real connection but I think Aria could have that with anyone if she would just give them a chance. However Ezra is special to Aria in a way because he doesn’t know her past and therefore she can be herself without worry that he is judging her. It will be interesting to see how the relationship progresses throughout the rest of the series. As far as post-Iceland Aria goes, I don’t think anyone really knows her. While Ezra knows her current self the best of anyone, he doesn’t know her past so I don’t think he can really know her. As far as everyone else in her life, she won’t let them in enough to really know her either. She is very guarded like all the other girls are.

9. I think the confrontation was true to their family. They are constantly striving to be perfect and better than each other and that is a clear message in the confrontation as well. They clearly have their favorites and Spencer is never going to be their favorite.

10. I think Ali has a lot of secrets. She did not become who she is and she did not disappear without having secrets. I believe these secrets are withheld to keep the mystery of the series going. If we knew Ali’s secrets, then we would probably know who killed her and who “A” is. I also believe these secrets are withheld because the book is really about the other four girls rather then Ali. I think overtime we will learn more about Ali and her past.

11. I honestly have no idea how “A” knows so much. I think it is very possible that Alison had another friend that she told everything to. Her personality defiantly suggests that she is not trustworthy and that she wouldn’t hesitate to spill the other girls’ secrets. Another possibility is that someone has been watching them from the start. One of Ali’s secrets could lead to the revelation that someone was following her and that’s also why she disappeared. Maybe the other girls accidently got caught in a game Ali was playing with someone else.  As far as why that person would now torture the girls, I do not know but I think it could be a possibility that someone was a witness to same exact events that Ali was a witness to. Ali did always like to play games.

12. From what I know of Alison I do not like her. I think she is an insecure manipulator that only brought trouble for the girls. The only positive thing I have to say about Alison is that she is what made the girls become friends and who they are today. She gave them confidence and each girl was able to realize their potential because of her. If she had not been in their lives, I do not think they would have ever been friends and that they would be entirely different people.

13. My favorite liar is Aria followed by Spencer. Aria is different from the rest and has her own unique interests that she is constantly exploring. I relate to her on so many levels and I think she will always bring something new to the situation. Spencer is my second favorite because she is so intelligent and beautiful at the same time. I think she represents how every woman should be… strong and independent. My least favorite liar is Hanna. I think she is such a spoiled brat and reminds me of all the posers and fakes I have met. She is constantly looking to be someone else instead of simply being herself. Last but not least I have to mention Emily. I’m neutral on Emily. I do not find her interesting in a good or bad way. While her character is vital to the series, I find it hard to relate to her on a personal level.

14. As I mentioned in question 13, I relate to Aria the most. Throughout high school I was constantly adapting to find where I fit in. I finally found where was that and haven’t looked back since. I’ve never been scared to be who I am and have found that inner confidence although I still have those doubts. I also relate to her relationship with Ezra because of the games she played with him to get him to want her back. Those games are all too familiar in my earlier relationships.

15. I think these issues are a problem in this book because those issues are never addressed as being wrong. Young girls are reading these books and thinking that it is acceptable behavior. There is not a single statement made about these not being acceptable behavior. In general I do not think that there is a problem with drug and alcohol use, as well as sex in young adult novels, as long as these issues are addressed. It would be unrealistic to not mention these issues, as sadly they are a common issue in reality, however discouraging the reader could potentially go a long way.

16. So far I think the book and the TV show add up pretty much dead on. The only main issue I have noticed is Emily does not have a sister (to my knowledge) in the show, however Emily interacts with her sister on a regular basis in the book. I’m also curious to see how the series continues, since the first book is the first episode of the show. I expected the book to include at least a few episodes but it did not. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues. One of my biggest questions with the shoe is who “A” is and if each book is just one episode, I’m worried we may never know who is “A” is.

Hart of Dixie Pilot Review - Joint Post

Jennie's thoughts:
I love love LOVED this show! It's just the right mix of clever and cute to make me want to keep watching. Obviously there are other doctor shows on TV right now, but I really enjoyed the concept of this one and the idea that not all life plans work out exactly the way we think they should. I think for a soon to be post-grad this is a good concept for how to think about life after school. Things happen for a reason.

I really liked the fact that the pilot episode could stand on its own. I think a lot of the time shows try to give such a huge cliffhanger so that you have to watch them that they don't give enough of a hook into the story. I liked how we really get to develop Zoe's character and understand why she ended up in Blue Bell all in the first episode. Yes, there are still some weird things in the story that kind of allude to future episodes (like what's up with Lemon and Lavon...) and of course there will be the love triangle thing probably going throughout the season. I think they kept enough back that people will keep watching, but actually gave us a reason to want to see the whole first episode through. The only thing I was really missing was a best friend character for Zoe. I mean, we obviously know who her enemy is (Lemon) but her nurse's assistant is too old to be a bestie. Maybe it'll be Lavon?

I have to say, favorite part of the whole show is when Zoe goes and gets her wine and is looking for a dry chardonney and asks the clerk girl who promptly hands her a box of wine. And then the subsequent scene of her walking down the road, stopping to fill up her dixie cup from the box, and continuing on. It was just fun and cute and definitely made me laugh. Who doesn't enjoy a nice boxed wine, am I right?

This is definitely my favorite new show so far and could be my favorite show period this season! I can't wait to see more! What'd you think?

Michelle's thoughts:
As Jennie stated as well, this may be one of my favorite shows this season. It was the perfect mixture of fun and intrigue at the same time. Everything about the episode makes me want to watch the next one. Being out of college for a few years and nothing working out as I had planned is exactly what Zoe is coming to grips with. This is so true to any college graduate and young adult. Life doesn't go as planned, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the journey. I think this season will show Zoe's journey of accepting her new reality.

My favorite scene of the premiere episode had to be the Burt Reynolds scene. It was so true to her character and background. And who wouldn't want a sexy young guy rescuing you? I can't wait to watch the inevitable love triangle develop throughout the season. I'm also anxious to learn more about Lemon and Dr. Breeland's story. Seriously what is up with those two?

Only 6 more days to go!!!

Pretty Little Liars: Discussion Questions

1. In the book's introduction chapter, Alison alludes to the other girls secrets in front of the group (like when she calls Emily "killer" or says that she enjoyed the streaking a little too much, or questioning Aria about why she carries around something her dad gave her). Is she being a bad friend? Why do you think she does this?

2. In the first four chapters, one for each character, each of the girls act dishonest or dishonorable in one way or another. Emily hides Alison's disappearance and the extent of their friendship from Maya, Aria leads Ezra to believe she is much older than she is, Hanna shoplifts from Tiffany's with Mona, and Spencer recalls when she kissed Melissa's boyfriend Ian. Are these instances of dishonesty general personality traits or are their deceptions understandable?

3. Out of each of the girls first message from "A," who do you think gets the meanest message and why?

4. Does it seem like all the girls had more of a connection with Ali than with one another? Why or why not?

5. Spencer admists that she kissed Ian because she was mad at and jealous of Melissa. Do you think this is the same reason she goes for Wren?

6. Are Mona and Hanna good friends to one another or are they really frenimies? Can they rely on one another?

7. Is Maya a good or bad influence on Emily?

8. Is Ezra really special to Aria? Or is he only special because he didn't know her before? Does anybody really know post-Iceland Aria?

9. What were your thoughts on the confrontation between Spencer and her family over the Wren situation?

10. Aside from "the Jenna thing" which it seems involved all five girls, did Ali have other secrets? She seemed to know a lot of bad things about the other girls, but we don't really hear of any bad things involving her. Why do you think this is?

11. Unitl the very end, "A" really does seem to be Alison because of details from the past that only Alison knew about. How does "A" know so much? Is it because Alison had another friend she told everything to? Knowing what we do about Alison's personality is it feasible that she would blab the other girls secrets? Or does there have to be another explanation here?

12. From what you know of her, do you like Alison? Why or why not?

13. Which of the liars is your favorite or favorites? Which is your least favorite? Why?

14. Which of the liars do you think you are most like?

15. Do you think the drug, alcohol use, and sexual themes are a problem in a young adult book? Why or why not?

16. How do you think the book and the TV show compare at this point?

Weekend Movies

So this weekend was filled with many adventures including my usual trip to the movies. This weekends movies included Abduction and The Lion King 3d.

Abduction-

First off I need to tell you that I not only enjoy teen novels but teen movies as well. There is something so entertaining about young "drama" and how it has nothing to do with reality. Abduction is a perfect example of this. Nathan (Taylor Lautner) is a high school student who suddenly discovers he is on a missing persons website. With the help of his crush Karen (Lily Collins) he proceeds to go on an entirely unrealistic journey that involves not only the bad guys hunting him but the CIA as well. While the movie was entertaining and Taylor Lautner shows that he has more to offer than his acting skills in Twilight, it is quite laughable and very unbelievable. On a side note Lily Collins is a welcome new comer and I'm looking forward to her version of Snow White... I just hope she loses some of those eyebrows. There are entirely too distracting. Overall I rate the movie a B- if you like teen movies.

Lion King 3d-

All I have to say is the Lion King does not disappoint. It is still magically fantastic as it was the first time around. I believe the "grown ups" in the theater enjoyed the movie more than the "kids" did. There was not a single dry eye left in the theater. And whats not to laugh about Simba and JTT! My only negative comment is the lack of 3d effects. There are so many scenes that 3d effect could have really added magic to the movie, but sadly there was not a single scene were the effects were noticeable. Overall I give the Lion King 3d a A- simply for the lack of 3d effects.

I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend and maybe even saw a movie or two. Till next time...

Michelle

TV Promo Posters

My DVR is getting pretty full with the TV shows that I need to catch up on, so I'm not really ready to post about the content just yet. But one thing I do love about a new TV season are new TV promotional posters. This season I thought some were really good and some were just kinda blah. Here are a couple of the ones I found noteworthy (for being both good and not so good):

Hart of Dixie (Monday's on the CW)
I thought this poster was absolutely adorable and has some great details (like the little heart stethescope). I wonder if they purposely got suitcases that looked big enough for Rachel Bilson to crawl inside... probably. I've seen other promotional images that have a posed image of all the ensemble cast with Rachel Bilson in the middle. I definitely like this one because having her alone seems to portray what I think the show will be about: a big city girl moving into the middle of nowhere and being forced to figure things out on her own. This hits the mark for me. Grade: A

Grimm (Fridays on NBC)
I also really responded to this poster. From the initial look it just looks like any other CSI-type show with two guys examining the dead body, but look a little deeper. The hand in the foreground, the house billowing smoke in the background, and is that a red hood next to the body? I also liked the tagline here "not your usual suspects." Grade: A

Ringer (Tuesdays on the CW):

It's true, Sarah Michelle Gellar can do no wrong in my eyes and I have been anxiously awaiting her return to TV. I think these promo images really get across the main concept of the show (the twin thing) without pulling out so much of the additional story lines to confuse people. For a first season introductory promo I think they did a really good job. Grade: A

Secret Circle (Thursdays on the CW):
I thought this poster was alright. Not fantastic, but definitely not the worst of the bunch.
The coloring on it and the birds show that there is a little bit of a supernatural vibe to the show and the kids actually look like they're dressed appropriate for their characters. If the show sticks around for a second season I would hope that the poster starts to show a little bit more. Grade: B

Revenge (Wednesdays on ABC):
My only real problem with this is that Emily Van Camp looks about 40 feet tall. The thorn dress seems very appropriate, but it's soooo obviously photoshopped that it really loses it's appeal for me. I think I would like the poster a whole lot better if Emily was shown at more of a distance and the dress extended out in front of her instead of below her. I just think this looks weird... Grade: C

Pan Am (Sundays on ABC):
This poster has certainly grown on me. I first saw it and really didn't like it at all, but now I'm starting to see that it's okay for a first season attempt. I don't like how it seems obvious that the four ladies were photographed seperately and photoshopped together, they're in a little bit different places in their stride and I think it would have been much better if they were in the same place. Also, what's with the girl on the end of the right side who has her left leg forward instead of her right? I thought that part of the pan am brand is that they're all the exact same. Details people! Grade: C

Nikita (Fridays on the CW):
I'm giving this a C rating primarily because it's missing Alex! The tag line on it is "new allies, new enemies, new night." This picture does a great job of showing Nikita with her "new allies," but where are her "new enemies?" I feel like they should have had Alex in there on the left. Grade: C

Vampire Diaries (Thursdays on the CW):
I have to say, I don't think this poster says anything about the show or the third season. The one thing I do like about it is that they included Claus. I'm really excited that he's sticking around to be the bad guy on this upcoming season. But really, Elena wouldn't be wearing that ball gown. It's just a poster of pretty people in pretty poses and I don't see it attracting any new viewers unless they just really think the boys are hot (which they are, let's face it!). Grade: D

Gossip Girl (Mondays on the CW):
My issue with the Vampire Diaries poster is pretty much my same issue with this poster. Are they telling me to watch Gossip Girl because it's a bunch of pretty people in pretty clothes and pretty poses? Yes, Serena and Blair do dress up in pretty outfits and get all glammed out on occasion, but this poster sends a message to me that this is all the show is about. and what's with Dan in a suit? I thought he was supposed to be the cool hipster guy that was way too dorkishly cute to be bothered with the high society life! He looks pretty high society to me. I just don't think this poster gives anything about the characters or what the show is going to be about this season. Grade: D

Charlie's Angels (Thursdays on ABC):
I think ABC could have gone a lot of different directions with this promo. They could have gone completely nostalgic and done the Charlie's Angels "pose" we all know. They could have gone funky and shown how these aren't the same angels from the 70s. But instead they give us three pretty white girls (hey, I thought the one girl was actually black?!) in white dresses on a white background. They aren't showing any personality here to show how different they are and they aren't kickin it old school to play on the nostalgia. Grade: F

I'm still looking forward to seeing all the shows, even the ones that I think have silly posters! What do you think about the posters?

Jennie

Welcome!

Michelle and I are entirely new to this whole blogging thing, but we wanted to try it as a way to stay connected and talk about the things that we enjoy most. As with anything, it may take us a couple weeks to get through the initial learning curve. Hopefully we'll be able to figure it all out!

We've started to include additional pages with the things we'll be talking about, starting with our book club selection. You can read more about why we chose Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard on that page.

Of course we will also have to talk about the TV shows and movies we watch! You can check out our TV and movie "schedules" on the additional pages in order to see what we're watching. We won't probably talk about each and every show, but as you can see there's a lot that we both watch that we'll both want to talk about! We'll just be playing it by ear!

And then of course we'll just be talking about whatever else we want to talk about! So come back often and feel free to comment! If you agree, if you disagree, we're down to hear about it so let us know! Until next time...
