Pretty Little Liars: Discussion Questions

1. In the book's introduction chapter, Alison alludes to the other girls secrets in front of the group (like when she calls Emily "killer" or says that she enjoyed the streaking a little too much, or questioning Aria about why she carries around something her dad gave her). Is she being a bad friend? Why do you think she does this?

2. In the first four chapters, one for each character, each of the girls act dishonest or dishonorable in one way or another. Emily hides Alison's disappearance and the extent of their friendship from Maya, Aria leads Ezra to believe she is much older than she is, Hanna shoplifts from Tiffany's with Mona, and Spencer recalls when she kissed Melissa's boyfriend Ian. Are these instances of dishonesty general personality traits or are their deceptions understandable?

3. Out of each of the girls first message from "A," who do you think gets the meanest message and why?

4. Does it seem like all the girls had more of a connection with Ali than with one another? Why or why not?

5. Spencer admists that she kissed Ian because she was mad at and jealous of Melissa. Do you think this is the same reason she goes for Wren?

6. Are Mona and Hanna good friends to one another or are they really frenimies? Can they rely on one another?

7. Is Maya a good or bad influence on Emily?

8. Is Ezra really special to Aria? Or is he only special because he didn't know her before? Does anybody really know post-Iceland Aria?

9. What were your thoughts on the confrontation between Spencer and her family over the Wren situation?

10. Aside from "the Jenna thing" which it seems involved all five girls, did Ali have other secrets? She seemed to know a lot of bad things about the other girls, but we don't really hear of any bad things involving her. Why do you think this is?

11. Unitl the very end, "A" really does seem to be Alison because of details from the past that only Alison knew about. How does "A" know so much? Is it because Alison had another friend she told everything to? Knowing what we do about Alison's personality is it feasible that she would blab the other girls secrets? Or does there have to be another explanation here?

12. From what you know of her, do you like Alison? Why or why not?

13. Which of the liars is your favorite or favorites? Which is your least favorite? Why?

14. Which of the liars do you think you are most like?

15. Do you think the drug, alcohol use, and sexual themes are a problem in a young adult book? Why or why not?

16. How do you think the book and the TV show compare at this point?

  1. Jennie and Michelle,
This summer I am creating discussion guides to go with our book club. One of the books I am using is Pretty little liars by Sara Shepard. I would like your permission to use the questions you created from http://jennieandmichelle.blogspot.com/2011/09/pretty-little-liars-discussion.html.
Also, I would like to share my discussion guides with other libraries so that they may better promote literacy amongst teens and children. I hope this is ok, please let me know as soon as possible if I have your permission. Have a great week!
